Identifying patients who could benefit from the latest therapies is a constant challenge in a hospital setting. Valuable treatment options are sometimes missed due to limitations in traditional methods of analyzing patient data. Boston Scientific sought a solution to leverage real-time analysis of clinical data to identify potential candidates for innovative therapies.

The key was to analyze data from various sources, including inpatient communications (messaging), past Electronic Health Records (EHR), and patient episode data. Additionally, the system needed to seamlessly integrate with cloud-based applications used for patient follow-up. This comprehensive view of a patient’s health would allow physicians to make more informed decisions about potential therapies.

In response, we crafted an advanced interoperability system. This system flawlessly integrates with multiple hospital IT systems, such as Electronic Health Records (EHR), laboratory, and pharmacy systems. It efficiently processes hospital messages, feeding critical data into a rules engine that identifies patients who may benefit from specific therapies. Capable of handling diverse formats and standards like HL7, FHIR, DICOM, and custom APIs, the system also connects with third-party hospital applications and cloud-based tools. This connectivity ensures that physicians have immediate, accurate data access for timely and precise case management.

We developed an advanced interoperability system specifically designed to address these challenges. This comprehensive solution features:

• Full-featured integration engine: Seamlessly connects with various hospital IT systems, including EHR, laboratory, and pharmacy systems.
• Rules engine: Analyzes real-time data to identify patients with specific characteristics that may indicate potential benefits from targeted therapies.
• Advanced interfacing: Handles diverse data formats and standards like HL7, FHIR, DICOM, and custom APIs, ensuring compatibility with existing hospital infrastructure and third-party applications.

By integrating this robust system, physicians gain immediate access to accurate and unified patient data, empowering them to make timely and precise diagnoses and identify potential therapy candidates.

The Meditecs-powered solution is actively being deployed in numerous European hospitals, and the results are promising. The system facilitates increased identification of potential therapy candidates, leading to improved patient care.

During the initial deployment phase spanning 2.5 years across two sites, the system processed a staggering amount of data:

• Nearly 1 million patient episodes.
• More than 300,000 unique patients.
• More than 11 million messages.

This data analysis has yielded invaluable insights used for research, continuous improvement, and ultimately, better patient outcomes.
